Hexie Quilt {winter project complete}

This winter, my sister taught me the art of the hexie. It's a lot of hand stitching with paper pieces and smaller bits of fabric {great way to use up those scraps}. After many starts and breaks, I finally finished my Hexie Quilt, and I am so thrilled with the finished product.

I love all of the colors and mix of vintage and newer fabrics. The quilt back is another favorite vintage sheet, bound with some handmade vintage binding.

There were many evenings sitting with one of my Dears, huddled under heavy blankets watching a show or chatting while my fingers were busy stitching little hexies of varying colors.

After hand stitching so many darling hexies, my fingers needed a little rest, so I machine quilted this blanket with a cross-hatch look. Still took some time, but not nearly the time of hand quilting.

I love having a big winter project to challenge myself-- last winter it was my Granny Striped Afghan and this winter, the Hexie Quilt. With the winter months keeping me indoors, I like having projects that built or take time to complete. I loved learning something new as well, and know the hexie will be used in future sewing projects.
